Artist Bio:

Lords of Form began in 2012 as an outlet for the growing body of music being created by guitarist, songwriter and producer Niall Hone. By that point Hone had already spent four years as a member of Hawkwind, contributing songs and performances to numerous releases, including tracks such as Green Machine, Seasons, Prometheus and The Hills Have Ears, alongside substantial contributions to the Hawkwind Light Orchestra album Stellar Variations.

While Hawkwind provided an extraordinary creative environment, Hone was generating far more material than could fit within the framework of a single band. Songs, instrumentals, soundscapes and sonic collages accumulated rapidly, eventually forming the foundations of Lords of Form.

The roots of the project stretch back even further. During the late 1980s Hone was a member of Mandragora, recording several albums and supporting Hawkwind on tour. Later, as a member of Tribe of Cro, he once again found himself sharing stages with the band that would ultimately become such a significant part of his musical life. By the time he joined Hawkwind in 2008, he already had a long-standing connection to the UK’s psychedelic underground.

Inspired by the free-form spirit of bands such as Amon Düül II, Hawkwind, Ash Ra Tempel and Earthless, Hone’s original vision for Lords of Form was a genuine psychedelic jam band. The first incarnation featured guitarist Chris Rizzanski, formerly of Enos, and drummer Sam. Although the live project proved short-lived, the studio partnership between Hone and Rizzanski produced the first official Lords of Form release. Tracks such as Howitzer and Have You Got The Guts introduced the project’s blend of heavy psychedelia, space rock and experimental songwriting, while a wealth of additional recordings remained unreleased in the archives.

Following Rizzanski’s move to France, Hone continued writing and recording, eventually recruiting guitarist Ross Fuller alongside drummer Jamie. By this point much of what would become Flying Chromium Society had already been written and recorded, with Fuller and Jamie contributing to the latter stages of the album’s creation. The chemistry proved fruitful and the lineup would go on to produce some of the most celebrated music in the Lords of Form catalogue, including Flying Chromium Society and 23 Strangers.

As opportunities increased and support slots with Hawkwind began to appear, the band evolved again. Through mutual connections, Hone assembled a new lineup featuring himself on guitar, George Cobbold, also formerly of Enos, on bass, Jamie on drums and Trim of King Goat on vocals. Although relatively short-lived, this incarnation produced the False Lights EP, released through SkidMark Music.

Alongside the various band lineups, Hone and Jamie also recorded Hypnotise the World, a largely self-contained studio work featuring Hone on guitars, basses, keyboards and production, with Jamie providing the drums. The period culminated in the release of Our Shared Humanity, a retrospective vinyl collection released through SkidMark that gathered together key recordings from across the project’s history. The album remains the band’s only vinyl release to date.

As previous lineups gradually faded away, Hone once again returned to working largely alone. During this period a different style of material began to emerge: mellower in places, more atmospheric and often carrying a distinctly eerie quality. The next turning point came after Hone engineered and produced an album for singer-songwriter Tony Whiting. During the sessions, Whiting heard several unfinished Lords of Form recordings and the pair quickly discovered an effortless creative chemistry. Demos sent one evening would often return within days transformed by new lyrics, vocal melodies, guitar arrangements and fresh ideas.

Beginning in late 2025, the partnership developed a handful of sketches into what would become Fallow and Fain. Drawing heavily on folklore, landscape, memory and the mysteries of the English countryside, the album represented a significant new chapter for Lords of Form while retaining the exploratory psychedelic spirit that had always defined the project.

Released in April 2026, Fallow and Fain sold out immediately and became the fastest-selling release in the band’s history. Built around ten expansive and immersive songs, the album has attracted praise from listeners across the psychedelic, folk and progressive rock communities and has already generated significant demand for a future vinyl edition.

The current lineup features Niall Hone on guitar and electronics, Tony Whiting on vocals and guitar, George Cobbold on bass and Luke of the metal band 10 Plagues on drums, whose powerful and imaginative playing has brought a fresh energy to the live show. Long-time drummer Jamie remains an important part of the Lords of Form story, although geographical realities have made regular performances increasingly difficult.

With renewed momentum behind the project, Lords of Form have returned to the stage with a carefully chosen run of live performances. Highlights include support appearances with Hawkwind in Reading and at the Friends and Relations Festival in Morecambe, alongside shows with Storm Brewing, the new band led by Hawkwind keyboard player Magnus Martin.

Meanwhile, Hone continues to push forward creatively. Several new projects are already taking shape, including Studio Drop One: Digital Dust, a dub-inspired exploration drawing influence from The Orb, Leftfield, King Tubby and NoMeansNo; Hercene’s Fever, a garage-psych project inspired by cult horror cinema, MC5, Funkadelic, Brain Ticket and The Bevis Frond; and The Simulation Ends, an ambitious new Lords of Form album blending post-rock atmospheres, heavy psychedelia, space-rock intensity and themes of technology, perception and collapsing realities.

Today the band rehearses in the South Downs landscape that helped inspire much of Fallow and Fain, within sight of the Long Man of Wilmington and surrounded by the ancient countryside that continues to shape its music. More than a decade after its inception, Lords of Form remains a constantly evolving creative force, driven by curiosity, experimentation and a deep belief in the enduring power of psychedelic music.

The future is bright. The future is psychedelic.
